Johnson County is named for Colonel Richard Mentor Johnson, the 9th Vice President of the United States. The county was established in 1837 and housed the first capitol of Iowa, located in Iowa City. It is currently the home of Iowa Hawkeyes , and rich Iowa history stretching to the pioneer days when the Fox and Sac Indians used the land for hunting.
